SEOUL, South Korea — Kim Jong Un has been reelected as the head of North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, according to state media reports released Monday. Party delegates praised Kim for expanding the country’s nuclear capabilities and elevating its influence on the regional stage.
The decision was announced during the party’s ongoing congress, a major political event where Kim is expected to present his strategic vision for the next five years. Observers say the meeting signals continued emphasis on strengthening North Korea’s nuclear and military programs, including weapons systems capable of reaching U.S. allies in Asia and the American mainland.
The congress, which opened last Thursday, comes at a time when Kim has adopted a more forceful posture in regional affairs. His government has rapidly expanded its nuclear arsenal while deepening cooperation with Russia, particularly through military collaboration linked to the war in Ukraine. These moves have further strained relations with both United States and South Korea.
Analysts believe Kim will use the congress to announce new defense objectives, including modernizing conventional forces and more tightly integrating them with nuclear capabilities. At the same time, he is expected to renew calls for economic “self-reliance,” relying on large-scale domestic mobilization as the country slowly recovers from pandemic-era isolation through revived trade with China and weapons exports to Russia.
North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency reported that Kim was reelected as general secretary with unanimous support from thousands of delegates on the fourth day of the congress. The role represents the highest position within the ruling party and effectively cements Kim’s authority over the state.
Kim, 42, has led the party throughout his tenure, though the title of the top post has evolved. It was changed from first secretary to chairman in 2016, and later to general secretary at the 2021 congress.
In a statement, the party credited Kim’s leadership with creating a military capable of countering “any form of aggression” and safeguarding the country’s future. It also claimed his policies had strengthened national pride among citizens.
State media confirmed that revisions to party rules were approved during Sunday’s session, though no details were released. Experts had expected potential changes that would further formalize Pyongyang’s hard-line stance toward South Korea, including Kim’s recent declaration that the two Koreas are permanently hostile states.
So far, official reports from the congress have avoided direct references to relations with Washington or Seoul. However, diplomacy between North Korea and both countries has effectively been frozen since the collapse of Kim’s 2019 summit with Donald Trump, which ended without agreement over sanctions relief and denuclearization.
Pyongyang has since rejected renewed outreach from the United States, insisting that any talks must exclude demands for nuclear disarmament. Relations with South Korea deteriorated further in 2024, when Kim abandoned the long-standing goal of peaceful reunification and formally designated the South as a permanent adversary.
As the party congress continues, analysts expect Kim to reinforce his confrontational foreign policy while consolidating political control at home.
