During a Monday interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, while discussing a potential pardon for Ghislaine Maxwell, Trump noted that “a lot of people have asked me for pardons,” including Combs, who was sentenced on Friday to over four years in prison for two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution.
In August, Combs’ defense attorney, Nicole Westmoreland, told CNN’s Elizabeth Wagmeister that the mogul’s legal team had contacted the Trump administration regarding a possible pardon, stating, “It’s my understanding that we’ve reached out and had conversations in reference to a pardon.”
Previously, Trump had expressed reluctance to grant Combs a pardon during a Newsmax interview, saying, “I was very friendly with him, I got along with him great and he seemed like a nice guy. I didn’t know him well. But when I ran for office, he was very hostile.” He added that this hostility made pardoning Combs “more difficult to do.”
When CNN reached out in August about Westmoreland’s remarks, a White House official declined to comment on “the existence or nonexistence of any clemency request.”
On Monday, Combs’ legal team also requested that Judge Arun Subramanian, who issued the sentence, recommend to the Bureau of Prisons that Combs serve his time at a low-security federal facility in Fort Dix, New Jersey, to “address drug abuse issues” and “maximize family visitation and rehabilitative efforts.”
